These utopias are what Winston and Truman call home. There are many similarities and many differences between Winston and Truman and the societies in which they live.
Both Winston and Truman are being watched all day every day and every move they make is being controlled by a higher force. Truman is being watched for the sole purpose of entertainment. His whole life is being broadcast as a hit television show and his whole world is being controlled by the television producer. Everything that happens in his life is being controlled for ratings, and nothing more. In 1984 every member of the society is being watched by the government in order for the government to gain ultimate control.
